It was a hot, sunny day and I think I was going into the first grade. I was about six years old. I was short, had short hair, and looked like I’d just come from the beach. My hair was messy and I looked like I got sun burned. That morning when I woke up I was still half asleep. I figured that out after I ran into a couple of things in my living room. I also remember standing in the living room gazing at the big window in front of me. Actually, I swear I saw a white squirrel. I was once told that if you saw a white squirrel, you will receive good luck. After awhile I continued my daily routine, brushing my teeth, taking a bath, and eating breakfast. None of my siblings were awake yet; the only one that was awake was my Dad. Not sure where my mom went, she was a busy person though; she would always be with my church helping out or working at her work place PICA.
Around some of my siblings started waking up from their long sleep. Just like me, they did their daily routine in the morning. An hour passed, as we watched Sailor Moon and Pokémon. We suddenly got bored, all of us decided to go play at my Grandma’s house, like we always did on the weekends. After telling my Dad we were leaving, we rode our bikes to my Grandma’s house. Eventually some of us split up, my older sister Kelly went and left us to go play with her friends Linton, Cha, and Johnny, while the rest of us went to my Grandma’s house. When we got there, all of us split again. My brothers Jimmy and Sunny left to go play with my cousins Chris, Richard and Gabriel. I didn’t really remember where Windy was at, but I went and played with my favorite Aunt Linda who had a twin called Laura. All of us ate and played. It was also fun because there were a lot of people.
Several hours later, all of us left to go to my house, because my parents wanted to talk to the whole family. My Uncle Cha, my Aunts Xiamee, Tina, Linda, and Laura were there, and my cousins Betsy, Heather, Chris, Richard, and Gabriel were also there. I wasn’t paying attention to what my Dad was saying, neither did the other kids, all of us just went outside to play in the little playground my Dad built not too long before. As all the kids were playing, I pretend to be a garden lady and deliver goods to peoples houses. My sister Windy was supposed to play the people I was making deliveries to, but she played with something else. I got really mad at her because she wasn’t playing her role, so I decided to play on my own. It got boring after a while so I got on the swing which my Dad made for us; there were four swings and one yellow slide that split one swing away from the other three swings.
Back and forth I went, slowly closing my eyes as I felt the wind blowing in my face. I heard the door open and close, my cousins laughing and dogs barking, and I also heard my aunts talk about Backstreet Boys saying that they are so cute and handsome. A few minutes later I opened my eyes, I felt a bit dizzy, and I wanted to swing more and higher. I asked my Aunt Laura to push me which she did. I went higher and higher, it was so fun. Suddenly, the wind blew, which caused me to blink. For some reason, after that fast reaction I saw the white squirrel I had seen that morning. Swinging from here to there and gazing at that white squirrel as if I was watching a very interesting movie enjoying what I was doing until, the weirdest thing happened, Laura pushed me, and I was at the highest point on the swing. Where I can see the clear blue sky, for some reason I jumped off the swing at the highest point. It was like a game plan that someone planned but I didn’t know about it. When I landed I felt a sudden pain coming up my feet to my right leg like a snake's venom burning up to my legs.
I suddenly fell to the ground rolling around holding my right leg and crying. Everyone around me opened there mouths as if they drooling, and then my Aunts took me into the house where my Dad was sleeping. They told my Dad but, he didn’t say much but, he blamed my Aunt Laura just because she was pushing me. So, the next day she took me to Urgent Care. That day when I came home I had a purple cast on; it was like a solid purple long rock on my right leg that wouldn’t come off. I couldn’t bend my leg at all, ever since then I struggled on almost every thing, even going back to school. Day by day, I would sit around the house doing nothing, I even tried to go outside but, it didn’t go too well. Especially when a dog comes into your yard and everyone ditches you as you hop as fast as you can to your house out of fear.
I remember one day my Aunt Laura took me to go buy my crutches but none of them were my size so. We had to order them. I even tried to go to the State Fair, but it was a pain for my Dad because he was always carrying me, I felt really bad so I got everyone mad and we left home. Everyone also signed my cast; it looked like a New York wall that has graffiti on it. All of my Aunts and cousins signatures were on it. There were also crazy drawings on it, like a little drawing of me with my broken leg and I’m still not sure who drew it.
Two month’s later, as I woke up from a regular morning and of course I still had my purple cast on. Hours later my grandma fed us and took Windy and I to the Children Hospital for my check up. We got called on after a long wait, and then we still had to wait for the doctor to come. Finally, he came. He checked my leg, and talked to my grandma. I wasn’t listening so I missed out on what they were talking about. Minutes later a lady came in with a chainsaw. When I saw it I got up so fast that I almost fell. I was so scared that I stared at it for so long thinking would my family remember me when I die and thinking about the best times of my life, I felt like my life flash before my eyes. Then the lady put me on a bed and told my grandma to hold me. As she plugged in the chainsaw, I tried to get out but, I couldn’t. I was yelling and crying. Without realizing because I was so afraid I suddenly figured that my cast was off. As I was still crying, I felt my legs, and I wondered if my leg would work like it did before. The doctor came back and told my Grandma to tell me to try to walk. I was so scared that I lied to my Grandma and said “It still hurts,” but she knew I was lying.
My Grandma slowly held my hand and led me to a walking position. I gazed at my legs for a slight second then slowly took my first step. It didn’t hurt like it did before, I was so happy that I walked around the room so many times, and I suddenly ran to hug my grandma so tight, telling her that I could walk again. She responded “I know dear you can, I’m so proud of you.” Ever since that day, I knew that I could overcome anything if I tried, just like how I did that day. I was scared to stand alone to face this problem but, my Grandma led me through it. Just taking a risk can change a lot. Oh yeah, there will always be someone encouraging you to fight for what you want, they will help you but, not hold your hands forever. You just have to let go and explore, this event opened my eyes to encouragement.
i couldnt live with a broken leg at age 6. but then again i could have people doing stuff for me :)
